Bolton Wanderers are having quite an active January transfer window this time around and with what seems to be a more transparent edge to it. In recent years I had become accustomed to not hearing any transfer news at all (or that is how it felt) until deadline day. It used to infuriate me that other teams seemed to know what they were doing, who they were after, how much they were going to pay and they would have it done and dusted while Owen Coyle was still in his pyjama shorts.

This game has to be amongst the best of all time for Wanderers fans looking back fondly. Bolton Wanderers travelled to Highbury to face Arsenal (the FA Cup holders) in an FA Cup 4th round replay after a scintillating game at Burden Park had ended in a 2-2 draw. In the highlights below we join the game in extra time with the scores having been level at 1-1 after 90 minutes. This turned out to be yet another giant killing for the Bolton team of the 1990's and another famous "White Hot" game was added to the collection. As an added bonus the commentary for the video is provided b the old BBC GMR, 95.1 FM team. This will be the way that the majority of Wanderers fans will have experienced that game since tickets were hard to come by and there was no such thing as a live stream. The commentary certainly brought back memories for me! Enjoy... Players featured include Keith Brannagan, John McGinley, Owen Coyle, Andy Walker and Jason McAteer. (forgive my player name spellings, it's late)
Bolton Wanderers went out of the FA Cup when Everton stole an injury time winner at the Reebok on Saturday. The Wanderers miss out on the chance to progress to the fifth round to face League One side Oldham Athletic. After a shaky start which saw Everton take the league Bolton fought back well and controlled the game for long periods with impressive performances from Marvin Sordell, Marcus Alonso and Joshua Vela. It looked for all the world like a replay was on the cards until a late penalty area ping pong ended with the ball being half cleared before a 20 yard strike found it's way through a ruck of players and into the Bolton net. Bolton Wanderers Football Club asked for their supporters help to shift the snow around the Reebok Stadium in order to make the area safe in time for the FA Cup fourth round tie with Everton. Did they offer free tickets or free shirts? Maybe a Club Shop Voucher for a fiver? Ok then - a free hot drink? No! Did they heck-as-like. I couldn't believe my eyes when I read that the club were asking for volunteers to give up their own time and put in a back breaking shift before being rewarded with the pleasure of spending £20 of their own 'hard earned' to get into the ground for the match! Bolton Wanderers, meanwhile, have the highest paid manager and players in the division who were all gathered snugly inside in the players' lounge eating free hot soup and pasta. Zat Knight is on a purported wage of £15,000.00 PER WEEK (over two grand a day) and yet the club can't offer a few miserly pence to those willing to brave the cold and ice after the heaviest overnight snowfall in years. Could they not afford to get a few temps in for a couple of hours or get some extra stewards on the job? Personally I just think it is pure cheek on the part of the club to get the fans to do the dirty work. It's not as though we didn't all know the snow was on it's way. On Tuesday my weather report said HEAVY SNOW, Friday, 4pm til after midnight. So they had plenty of advance notice. It's also not as though we are a tiny club like Daisy Hill or Marine or even Bury who you could probably forgive and understand a last minute cry for help. All those fans who turned up early today to clear the snow should be Knighted. Zat Knighted. He should turn up to each person's house with a thank you letter and a crisp fifty. It's fans like this that keep players like him on wages like his*. I did not go to the Reebok early to lend my support for the pre match winter piss take and I do not know whether the club took pity in the end and bought everyone an overpriced Roll Over Hot Dog but they didn't offer anything up front. I also don't know if the players really were inside eating soup. But what I do know is that I found the very notion of the club asking the fans to get stuck in was all kinds of wrong considering the size and financial clout of their business. No matter how much I wanted a Big Mac you certainly wouldn't find me clearing the drive-through with my own shovel before I could order one and I think the same principle applies here. *I don't want to be one of the fans who turns up to help out and reinforce our position as the lowly supporter whilst keeping the players on their Royal, out of reach, millionaire perches. To anyone who turned up today to help out, you should not have bothered. Helping out will only serve to cause the club to take us more and more for granted. It would have been a far stronger message for all fans to give them a big 'up yours'! Reply Here in the discussion at Bolton Nuts Fan Forum Or comment below... We have waited a few days for this, but here it is! Bolton Wanderers' victory against the mighty Sunderland now has a set of video highlights to go with it! Bolton travelled to Sunderland for the FA Cup third round replay with little hope of a win being on the cards. Bolton had thrown away a two goal lead at the Reebok Stadium after Sunderland came back strongly in the second half to earn a the replay. Dougie Freedman made positive changes to the team, however, and they went on to impress. Afobe, Sordell, Lonergan (in goal), Vela, Holden and Ricketts all featured and Bolton looked all the better for it. It was almost 20 years to the day since Bolton went to Anfield and recorded a 2-0 win in very similar circumstances in an FA Cup replay against Liverpool. Just as against Sunderland this time around Bolton had taken a two goal lead at home against Premiership opposition only to see the big boys fight back to earn a draw and replay. In the video below you can enjoy the famous victory all over again. This was the start of the so called "White Hot Years" where Second Division Bolton Wanderers took on the elite teams and won! |
